When I look back at the chain of events that lead to my book, I’m reminded of the famous truth — there are no accidents.

My first book “The ‘Perfect’ Parent: 5 Tools for Using Your Inner Perfection to Connect with Your Kids” is launched Oct. 1. This may not seem monumental, considering I’ve had my whole life to work up to it. But 10 years ago, if someone told me I would be a published author with a dedicated parent following, I would have said they were dreaming.

At that time, I had already spent two decades raising a family and building a successful dental supply company with my husband in the Santa Clarita Valley, so I figured I was already doing everything I had been put on this planet to do. But then a health issue prompted me to seek out the works of Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, Deepak Chopra and others, which helped return me to a healthy state of mind and body.

As I healed, I felt empowered by their work and set about applying the tools in day-to-day challenges with my own kids. I began to explore the three basic facets of communication — thoughts, feelings and expressions — and how they play into strengthening or weakening connections between parents and children.

I came to fuse what I had learned about personal growth with my passion for keeping up with child development research. As I did so, I started to have great success with communicating and connecting with my own kids. But I had yet to discover how this would play into the bigger picture of my life.

One day my son Navin — a high school junior who was going through tough times — asked me, “What happens to kids with these issues who don’t have any family support?”

His question moved me to create prototypes of children’s products to help parents understand their kids’ inner world, build emotional intelligence skills and foster strong connections with their children. That’s when Tools of Growth was born, and I was thrilled when Julie Watson, PhD, also a Valencia resident at the time, joined me as co-founder.

Around the same time, I began helping family and friends in our community who were facing challenges with their kids, and before long, they asked me to start a parenting group that others could join.

When I warned them that I was not credentialed, one of the parents replied, “Your unique perspective, the depth of your scientific knowledge and your children are your credentials. Stop making excuses.” One group led to another, and another …

It was my daughter Nitasha who finally said, “Mom, you need to write a book with the tools you teach in your classes.”

I brushed off the idea, but she persisted. And Navin encouraged me to approach a publisher. I am grateful to have family and friends who have cheered me on, as the book has become a reality.

I’m excited about my journey forward. Am I ready? I never ask that question. I just know that this is what I came here to do, and the only way is the exciting new way forward.

I have arrived at my purpose and am here to share what I have learned in my parenting years. I certainly hope that it helps others along their journey. As for me, my life has just begun.
