Feels a little like the Fourth of July doesn’t it? Too, too hot! Bring on the June gloom I say!

SCV Man and Woman of the Year
Kudos to Greg Amsler and Nancy Coulter, the 2009 Santa Clarita Valley Man and Woman of the Year. The nonprofit volunteer star power in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Valencia during the 43rd annual recognition dinner was blinding!

There wasn’t an undeserving nominee among the impressive list of men and women — any one of the nominees would have been an excellent choice. Those nominated included: Chris Ball, Kerry Carmody, Wayne Crawford, Rick Patterson, Craig Peters, Tom Schmidt, Steve Sturgeon, Jane Bettencourt-Soto, Gigi Bost, Mary Ann Colf, Peggy Edwards, Tamara Gurney, Jorja Harris, Janice Hoskinson, Marlee Lauffer, Janice Murray, Lynne Plambeck, Donna Schmidt, Julie Sturgeon, Stephanie Weiss and Dora Zavala. Carl Goldman and Judy Penman were adorable as the emcees, and crooner Bill Lively did a wonderful job singing in the “reveal.”

Circus Vargas donates free tickets
Circus Vargas 2009, which will play the Valencia Town Center May 28 through June 7, has a long history of philanthropic contribution.

“We are always pleased to be able to give back to the community,” said Joan Hart, marketing and public relations director for Circus Vargas.

“If we can help raise awareness to a worthy cause, through our performance, through our art — well then, we are doubly fortunate.” Children and their families served by the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer will receive free tickets to the circus after KHTS radio tipped off Circus Vargus to the giving opportunity. Letter carriers rock
Last Saturday, letter carriers throughout the SCV not only delivered and picked up the mail, but they also picked almost 23 tons of food that residents of the SCV left out by their mailboxes to help “Stamp Out Hunger.” Everyone who donated food, the letter carriers and the volunteers of the SCV Food Pantry are to be given a big round of applause!
