The Santa Clarita Christian softball team had two bad innings and fell 12-2 on the road to Grace Brethren Thursday in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VI playoffs.

Eighth-ranked Grace Brethren scored six runs in the fourth and three in the fifth due in large part to five Cardinal errors.

“It really hurt us, and it’s sad it’s come to an end knowing the team we have,” said SCCS head coach Ali Aguilar.

The Cardinals (12-7) suffered a setback two weeks ago when senior catcher Christine Kash broke her finger in practice, and they were forced to reshuffle their defense.

Santa Clarita Christian wrapped Kash’s finger and shifted her to first base Thursday, but missed her bat in the lineup.

Senior pitcher Carly Asher went the entire way and gave up just three earned runs on eight hits.

Asher also went 1-for-3 and knocked in Stacy McCain to score one of the Cardinals’ run, while McCain went 2-for-3 and scored Brenna O’Neill with an RBI knock.

Kash will attend Westmount College in Santa Barbara on an academic scholarship, and Asher has received a full scholarship to pitch for Hope International.

The Cardinals return every other player for next season.

“I think we’re a lot better than what we showed today,” Aguilar said.
