Newhall man goes native

Retired Marine tears out lawn, embraces California indigenous plants

Born and raised in Southern California, 83-year-old Jim Bown of Newhall has seen his share of droughts over the years.

“But nothing like this,” he said last week in the front yard of his Maple Street home as a gardener planted white sage, manzanita and other native California plants in the bare ground.
