Brian Belue accomplished two goals Friday.

The Saugus High graduate and former College of the Canyons track and field athlete finished seventh Friday in the decathlon at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in San Angelo, Tex. for Humboldt State.

By finishing in the top eight, Belue is now recognized as an All-American.

That was one goal.

The other was to break the school’s decathlon points record, which he did by scoring 6,774.

“I’m drained, but I have another energy that kicked in,” Belue said.

The Humboldt State senior set personal records in the 100 meters, long jump and high jump on Thursday, but admitted that he struggled Friday.

“Day two was a battle,” Belue said. “I was a little nervous. I didn’t do as well as I expected in the hurdles. In the discus, I went 15 feet under what I wanted. I started to become a headcase in the pole vault.”

Belue went into the final event, the 1,500, in eighth place.

He finished the event in 4 minutes, 45.9 seconds, a season-best.

Belue only dabbled in track and field at Saugus and said he did it at College of the Canyons to “kill time.”

He said that he may compete in future events, but the history major isn’t sure yet.
