Educator and author Sean McDowell addressed questions about evolution and creation at Legacy Christian Academy's "Evolution and Intelligent Design" seminar May 8. More than 160 people attended the on-campus event.

The creation seminar was the first in a series presented by the school. Legacy Christian Academy is an independent, Christian institution emphasizing academic excellence and a comprehensive college-preparatory education.

The Family Life Series is a biblical-based, educational program featuring dynamic and influential Christian leaders.

The series will offer discussions on a variety of topics critical to family life.

"The series is aimed at developing spiritual maturity within our school culture," Superintendent Tim Borruel said. "We are an academically focused Christian school. Students get influenced throughout each school day. We wanted to offer something for parents and faculty (as well)."

The event helped attendees prepare themselves to defend their faith, Borruel said. They walked away with more knowledge pertaining to what he called "the fallacies of evolution," he added.

"The point of it was for students to get both sides (of the argument) and come to their own conclusions," Borruel said.

McDowell has master's degrees in theology, philosophy and ethics. He received the Charles Feinberg award, the highest honor given to a graduate of Talbot Theological School. He teaches philosophy and literature at Capistrano High School in San Juan Capistrano.

Prior to attending seminary, McDowell was a youth pastor for inner city Los Angeles and he pioneered the skateboard ministry, Higher Ground. He also was an assistant basketball coach for Biola University.

McDowell's most recent book, "Understanding Intelligent Design," discusses the somewhat controversial topic presented at Legacy's event.

"Intelligent design is a scientific endeavor that looks for signs of intelligence in the natural world," McDowell said in an interview about his book on "That's all that it does."

The author realizes the importance of the debate and believes it is essential for parents, teachers and youth to understand both sides.

"There are holes in evolutionary thinking," he said. "Creation implies purpose. There is a purpose to the way for us to live."
The next seminar in the Family Life Series will be on Oct. 23. It will feature speaker Chris Mueller. He will be discussing God's design for marriage.

The Christian school plans to offer seminars three times a year, Borruel said.
