Golden Globe-nominated filmmaker speaks at Newhall Community Center

Very few filmmakers are able to pitch a pet project to an established film director, let alone someone they admired as a mentor.

But CalArts graduate Jorge Gutierrez, an animator and director, told a crowd of more than 60 people in Newhall last Thursday that he got that rare opportunity when Guillermo Del Toro — a successful Mexican film director, screenwriter, producer, and novelist - invited him to discuss his project, which would later become the widely successful computer-animated feature “The Book of Life.”
