A brush fire sparked by a vehicle fire near Pyramid Lake was extinguished in less than 15 minutes Sunday, but not before it torched a quarter acre of roadside vegetation, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Shortly before 2:10 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to reports of a vehicle fire in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, just north of Vista Del Lago Road, Fire Department Supervisor Cheryl Sims told The Signal.

“We got the call as a vehicle fire,” she said. “It became a brush fire, one quarter acre, with winds from the southwest reported as moving at a moderate rate of speed.”

Officers with the California Highway Patrol received reports from motorists seeing light smoke and flames from a black SUV.

The fire was put out at 2:23 p.m., she said.
