From earthquakes to floods, Santa Clarita city officials will outline what they think will be the biggest threats to public safety at a study session Tuesday night.

City officials have drafted the safety element in the One Valley, One Vision General Plan, a joint city-county plan adressing the future of the city. The General Plan is expected to be finished in early 2009.

The safety element is one of seven state-required elements within the plan and includes geologic and flood hazards, police and fire protection and emergency preparedness.

"The safety element reflects the city's objectives and policies for protecting Santa Clarita citizens from any unsafe conditions," said Jason Smisko, propject manager for the plan. "This element comprehensively identifies any potential hazardous conditions in the valley and guides policy makers in making land use and development decisions."

The safety element can be found on the city's Web site at

City officials will present the safety element to the Planning Commission at 5:30 p.m. in the Century Conference Room on the first floor of City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Blvd.

The meeting is the first of five study sessions city officials have planned to discuss draft elements of the General Plan.
