Tale of two Schwartzes

Tennis coach unhappy he’s mistaken for assault suspect with same name

Two Santa Clarita Valley men share a name, but not much else.

David Schwartz, 41, of Newhall, was arrested last week after sheriff’s deputies said he shouted insults and hurled a metal bolt at mentally disabled children on a Special Olympics fundraising run.

David Schwartz, 37, of Stevenson Ranch, is a prominent tennis coach who volunteered last year for the Special Olympics.

The two men are not related, but the younger Schwartz has gotten numerous phone calls and many funny looks because of the elder Schwartz’s alleged crime.

“I think I have a pretty good name in the valley,” coach Schwartz said. “I have a very strong clientele that I do not want to lose.”

Schwartz the suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon Wednesday afternoon during the SCV Special Olympics Torch Run fundraiser.

He could not be reached for comment by The Signal on Tuesday.

Sheriff’s deputies said the 41-year-old Schwartz pulled his car up alongside a group of mentally disabled kids while they ran alongside nearly a dozen sheriff’s deputies, called them a derogatory name, then threw a metal bolt that narrowly missed the group.

Coincidentally, the alleged crime occurred in Valencia near a park where coach Schwartz often teaches tennis clinics. He saw the runners pass by.

“I saw the police go by with these kids,” he said. “I said to my kids, ‘Hey, look, they’re doing some sheriff’s run, or something like that.’ It must have happened 20 minutes later.”

Meanwhile, The Signal has received more than a couple of calls asking if the arrested Schwartz was the tennis coach of local renown.

The answer: Definitely not.

Coach Schwartz has been asked several times about his age, where he lives and whether he had been arrested for that crime.

“Just this morning, again, someone said, ‘Hey, how old are you?’” Schwartz said Tuesday. “I said, ‘Thirty-seven, not 41. Stevenson Ranch, not Newhall.’

“I didn’t know there was another person within 20 miles who has that name,” he said. “If you have a picture of this guy, I’m curious now.”
