A man who was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy in Canyon Country earlier this month was identified Friday by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Miguel Hernandez, 39, of Pacoima died at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital on Jan. 14 after he was shot by a deputy earlier that day near Nathan Hill and Shangri-La drives.

Hernandez was a suspect in an assault-with-a-deadly-weapon case and was believed to be a member of the Brown Familia gang.

He was driving a two-tone Lexus when he was pulled over by the deputy Jan. 14. The Lexus matched the description of a car used in a drive-by shooting earlier this month in Newhall. No one was shot in that incident, so Hernandez was facing arrest in an assault-with-a-deadly-weapon case.

After he stopped the Lexus, Hernandez immediately stepped out of the vehicle and started yelling profanities at the deputy while appearing to challenge him to a fight, Sheriff’s Department officials said.

He appeared to turn his body to grab a weapon, according to officials, when the deputy fired.
