A basketball game between the Golden Valley Grizzlies and West Ranch Wildcats turned vicious Tuesday night when a brawl broke out at the end of the game with at least one juvenile assaulting another, a lieutenant with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.

Lt. Derek Sabatini said shortly before 10 p.m. that he anticipated a Golden Valley student would be arrested in relation to the incident.

“There was a basketball game at West Ranch between West Ranch and Golden Valley,” he said.

“A player from Golden Valley, for unknown reasons, went up into the stands and assaulted a student from West Ranch,” he said. “That student suffered lacerations to his face.

“There was a small disturbance after the game which was dispersed without incident.

“That (suspect) student left with the team to return to Golden Valley. We are on our way to Golden Valley to arrest him for battery,” Sabatini said shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Reports of other students, including two girls, being hurt could not be confirmed directly.

However, paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were called to West Ranch High School shortly after the heated basketball game ended at 8:30 p.m., Fire Department Inspector Robert Diaz said.

“We got the call as a medical response for a person in the locker room,” he said.

Although medical treatment was provided, neither ambulance transported anyone to the hospital, Diaz said.

The scuffle broke out in an area of the stands where much of the taunting of the Golden Valley team originated during the game, one witness told The Signal.
