With two less fireworks shows in town for this year’s Fourth of July celebrations, sheriff’s officials are bracing for bigger crowds at the two that remain.

“I’m not shortcutting,” said Sgt. Richard Cohen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. He said there will be increased numbers of deputies on patrol and handling traffic Saturday night.

The county’s “Lights of Freedom” fireworks show sparks up at 9 p.m. at Castaic Lake, and Santa Clarita’s official 20-minute show begins at 9:15 p.m. at Westfield Valencia Town Center.

Off the list this year are fireworks shows at Richard Rioux Park in Stevenson Ranch and Six Flags Magic Mountain.

Both of those shows were reportedly cancelled because of concerns about fire danger.

Both the Castaic and Town Center shows historically draw crowds that number in the thousands. Santa Clarita’s show has seen estimates of 20,000 people, city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz said.

The show in Valencia is free, and the Castaic show costs $25 per carload at the gate of Castaic Lake Recreation Area or $5 per walk-in.
