Big thanks to a Good Samaritan

In spite of our sometimes thinking that our society is self-centered and uncaring, we still have individuals who are courageous, caring, and possess integrity.

Recently I experienced an individual with all these character traits.

I had ridden my bicycle to a local Starbucks to purchase water for my daily bike ride.

I left my bicycle near the front door to go in for the purchase. Within less than a minute, I heard someone in the store yell, “Is that your bicycle? Someone just rode away on it!”

I ran out the door and tried to chase the man down but was unable to catch him.

A man pulled up in his truck and told me to get in and we tried to find the thief, but were unable to locate him.

I notified the sheriff’s office and they arranged to meet me at a local service station. As I stood in the driveway of the service station, I heard someone call from a truck in a lane of traffic across the street, “Are you the guy who had his bike stolen?”

I said that I was and he said, “I got it back for you.”

The man came to the station and told me he had witnessed the theft and followed the individual to the mall, where he confronted the man.

The individual dropped the bicycle and ran into the mall. The man had my bicycle in the back of his truck, undamaged.

Thank you, Nicholas Staves, for taking your time and having the courage, care, and integrity to be a Good Samaritan.
