Another Fourth of July is in the record books. I guess its time to gear up for the holidays!

Ice cream social at Senior Center
Have you ever attended an ice cream social? An old-fashioned ice cream social will be held 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Senior Center, 22900 Market St., Newhall. Enjoy memorable tunes by the Men of Harmony, sing-alongs, magic and lively piano songs. Tickets $10 adults, $5 children or $20 for entire family. It sounds like an absolutely perfect ending to a great long Fourth of July weekend. For information contact Bill (661) 424-9009 or

Fourth of July Parade
If you missed the annual SCV Fourth of July parade, you missed a great morning of community spirit and fun.

There’s just something about a parade ... what many folks don’t know is that the committee who organizes the parade every year is made up of community volunteers who freely give their talent and time. Volunteers. There’s no fancypants city staffer in charge of Santa Clarita’s annual Independence Day parade, just unsung volunteers(you know who you are ... ).

Fourth of July judging crew
A big red, white and blue salute to the folks who took on the daunting challenge of serving as judges in the annual Fourth of July parade. Special equestrian judge, Laura Hauser. Parade judges: Linda and Steve Lambourne, Sue and Dennis Ostrom, Pat Willett, Spencer Leafdale, Glo Donnelly, R.J. and Patty Kelly and Linda Tarnoff.

Kudos to Gary and Myrna Condie
The College of the Canyons Foundation has selected longtime COC supporters Gary and Myrna Condie to receive the 2010 Silver Spur Award for community service.

The couple are supporters of not only the COC Foundation, but the Boys & Girls Club of the SCV, the Boy Scouts of America, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Foundation and SCV Facilities Foundation. The Condies are among my favorite folks in the SCV and I always appreciate their kindness of spirit and charity of spirit.

More wonderful people in the Santa Clarita Valley

There are so many wonderful people in the SCV, among them, Teresa Todd, Morris Thomas, Stephanie Weiss, Tamme Hanson, John Dow and John Burton of Southern Wine and Spirits — Burton gives of so much of himself in time, effort and more to make the nonprofit wine tastings at Salt Creek Grille such a success. I also need to give a shout-out to Ignacio Munoz of Salt Creek Grille.

A talented chef and all-around good guy, Munoz is also on my list of wonderful people in the SCV. That’s the best part of living in the SCV — the truly extraordinary people.

An Affair to Remember
Jim Walker reports that a fine time was had by all at the recent “Summer Evening with the REP” held at the Bridgeport home of Jill Jackson of Dessert Alert. Among those attending the romantic lakeside evening under the stars were TimBen and Ingrid Boydston, Jill Jackson and Bill Friedman, Bret Engelmann, Courtney Bourdas-Henn, Sherry Klahs, Peter and Lana Clancey and Joyce and Lee Shulman.

Kudos to the committee who made it all happen, I know those kind of events just don’t “happen” — Debbie Clark, Stephanie Davis, Bill Quinn, Cindy Smith (RSVP Catering), Beth Hyde and Jill Jackson. Another shout out to the cast and crew who offered up the evening’s entertainment — George M. Chavez II, Kristen Heitman, Jeremiah Lowder, Erin Rivlin, and Lauren Pearsall. Staff and volunteers need some recognition, too, including — Ovington Michael Owston, Mikee Schwinn, Nanook, Tim Christianson, Johnny Schwinn, Justin Larkins, Bill Friedman, Ransom Boynton, Laura Clark-Greaver, Daniel Lench and Scott Verna.
