A bicyclist was injured and airlifted to safety Wednesday after he fell off his bike while on a trail south of Calgrove Boulevard and The Old Road in the Santa Clarita Valley, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The cyclist was traveling on East Canyon Road, about 4 miles south of The Old Road, when he fell shortly after 11 a.m., the Fire Department spokesman said.

Paramedics were dispatched after receiving a 911 call from the cyclist’s wife.

“I got a call from my husband,” Angie Raffta said about her husband, Alfonso.

“He was over mountain biking on the East Canyon Road, off of The Old Road, over going out to Three Trees (trail), and he said he had a fall and for me to call 911.”

“He said he thinks he dislocated shoulder,” she said at the scene while awaiting her husband’s rescue. “The firefighters said they couldn’t get to the area where he was at, so they were sending a helicopter and they’re airlifting him right now.”

Firefighters were on the scene with the helicopter about 11:30 a.m. Alfonso Raffta was airlifted from the trail to the parking lot of Newhall Church of the Nazarene.

His wife drove him to the hospital.

“I thank God for these firefighters,” Angie Raffta said before the couple left the scene. “They are so helpful.”

It wasn’t only Raffta who was airlifted off the trail. The helicopter pilot wheeled his bike out of the chopper, as well.
