The CalArts Community Arts Partnership program has been providing college-level arts training and practice to Los Angeles-area youth since 1990, giving young artists the opportunity to learn from California Institute of the Arts faculty.

"The great thing about CAP is that all the programs are free and they're taught by CalArts instructors," said Evelyn Serrano, assistant director of programs for CAP. "So our young students are getting the benefit of our instructors' vast experience."

CAP works in partnership with community arts organizations throughout Los Angeles County, giving young people the opportunity to participate in theater, puppetry, video, digital media, graphic design, animation, art, writing, music and more. All of the classes are designed to provide CAP participants with the same college-level training offered to CalArts students.

"We want these young people to know that they have a voice, and that they can express themselves through music, art, drama or literature," Serrano said.

The classes also look good on college applications, she said.

"Students actually use the arts pieces they create in our CAP classes as they apply for college, and they've been very successful with that," Serrano said.
