County supervisors unanimously approved a new $9.4 million fire station for Canyon Country on Wednesday that fire officials say is necessary to keep up with the area’s population growth.

The 9,600 square-foot Fire Station 128 is set to open in April 2011 on Whites Canyon Road near Heller Circle.

It is also one of six stations expected to be built in the Santa Clarita Valley over the next several years to keep in line with population growth, said Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Stephanie English.

The fire station approved this week would straddle the line between Canyon Country and Saugus, near where Whites Canyon Road becomes Plum Canyon Road. The building would boast sustainable design features including energy-efficient light fixtures, air conditioning and heating.

The station’s restrooms would use water-saving technologies and it would be landscaped with drought-tolerant plants. Its dormitories would house seven firefighters.

Chatsworth-based Novus Construction won the contract with Los Angeles County to build the station. The amount was more than $2.5 million less than the expected $12 million, according to a statement from county Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

Even before the station’s approval, the Santa Clarita Valley had been scheduled to receive a lot more attention from the fire department.

The planned Station 150 on Golden Valley Road, set to open at the end of 2010, would serve as a new division headquarters. Another station on Rock Canyon Road near Haskell Canyon Road is slated to open in the next six months or so, English said. Three additional battalion chiefs in incident-command positions would be assigned to the area.

Officials also plan to move temporary trailer stations in Saugus, Canyon Country and Castaic into permanent buildings, she said.
