A car that flipped and caught fire on Sierra Highway in the Santa Clarita Valley on Wednesday sparked a brush fire on both sides of the freeway and prompted a swift response by firefighters, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The single-car crash happened shortly after 5:10 p.m. in Newhall when a car flipped over in the northbound lanes of Sierra Highway just south of Newhall Avenue, Fire Department Supervisor Cheryl Sims said.

One person was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

The fire had burned 3 acres as of 7:45 p.m., according to Fire Department officials.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol shut down traffic on Sierra Highway as fire crews worked to battle the fire.

No structures were threatened by the fire, officials reported.
