Stop cuts to disabled

I'm mad as hell and I'm not taking it anymore!

My 23-year-old son is on monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, which includes an amount from the state. This amount was reduced in May and now it's been reduced even more, in the name of balancing an out-of-control budget, abusive spending practices and over-taxed population.

According to the Social Security Administration, as of July 1, 2009, the cut is "due to the state of California's budget problems."

Payments dropped from a whopping $764 per month in January 2009 (SSI, including $355 from the state) down to $722 (the reduction totally from California's portion).

What's wrong with these people? This is ethically and morally wrong.

My son has had commendations from U.S. Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, the city of Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich and the county Fire Department, to name a few, for his contributions to his community.

Unfortunately, he's also had more than 100 brain surgeries in the past 10 years, progressively lost most of his functional capabilities, and is totally disabled.

To qualify for SSI, he must be, and is, physically disabled, memory-challenged and blind and cannot have more than $2,000 in assets including cash. In other words, he has nothing to his name.

It may not sound like much to most - $42 per month - but when you cannot support yourself, it's a lot.

I don't see officials signing up for a pay cut, even $42 a month, or willing to disclose their across-the-board cuts.

Sen. George Runner's assistant said that "everyone had their issue" and the cuts were "across the board." I asked her to send me something to show that and she replied, "Oh, you know I can't do that."

Ha! Therein lies the problem...if cuts were "across the board," they'd be happy to prove it to stop the phone calls!

Shame on the state for cutting the paltry amount they contribute to those like my wonderful son, who represents so many who cannot speak for themselves and exist on so little. My son is blessed. I will fight for him until the end.

But for the many who can't or won't fight for their themselves and don't have anyone who can or will, please shout it from the mountaintops and help get the word out to as many as possible. Start with your state assemblyperson and state senator. They're in the government pages of the phone book. Please e-mail as many as possible, too!
