With the help of two separate grants, Charles Helmers Elementary in Valencia will have a new garden classroom by the end of the day tomorrow.

Helmers Elementary was granted both the Seeds of Change grant for $10,000 and the Lowe’s Heroes grant for $2,500 at the end of the last school year.

Volunteers from Lowe’s are working to build the garden Thursday and Friday, aiming to finish Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.

“My goal is to get a garden in every school,” said Lisa Ely, a local parent and author of the Kinder Gardens book series. Ely teamed up with the school to bring the garden project.

Ely has brought gardens to several other schools in California, but the Helmers’ garden is the first in her home district.

“This is the first one that’s ever been in my backyard,” she said.

Ely said that school gardens serve as more than just a place to grow flowers and vegetables.

She describes the garden as an “outdoor classroom,” where teachers of all grade levels can bring their students to learn about math and science, as well as plants.

The outdoor classroom curriculum is slated to begin after winter break this school year, Ely said.
