West Ranch High came out on top in team rankings Tuesday for the second time in as many Foothill League girls golf matches.

The Wildcats’ Ashley Mayhall, who was second behind teammate Mack Bailey last meet, was the day’s medalist with a 2-under 29.

“I think the difference (this meet) is I was making putts,” Mayhall said. “I had good opportunities for birdies.

“I have a lot of experience, so I don’t think I was anxious or anything (last meet). I just think it was a bad day.”

Bailey tied with Noelle Song, also of West Ranch, for second with 1-over 32. Valencia’s Sarah Baranda cracked the top three this meet, finishing in third with a 3-over 34.

West Ranch, which had a team score of 173, was followed by Valencia (188) and Saugus (211).

Golden Valley, Hart and Canyon rounded out the final teams with scores of 223, 227 and 245, respectively.

Valencia was just 15 strokes away from the team title this week as opposed to last week’s 18.

“I just feel like we’re moving forward,” Valencia coach John Minkus said of his team’s individual performances. “And the comfort level. They were really comfortable today. Just easygoing. Nobody was stressed. (It was) one shot at a time golf.

“They were just really solid,” Minkus said. “All my scores were between 34 and 41. We’re playing pretty consistent golf and each of my players had one big hole (they struggled with). That’s what we’re working on eliminating.”

Minkus is happy with the progress, but he is urging his team to not let off the gas pedal just yet in the race against West Ranch.

“(West Ranch’s) top three are so strong that it will take a complete team performance for us to challenge them,” he said. “Their top three are not going to make mistakes.”

The Wildcats are working towards another league title, but they’re not taking any opponents, including the Vikings, lightly.

“They definitely are giving us a challenge,” Mayhall said. “Don’t expect less of your opponents. You always want to expect the best of the people you’re playing against.”

Next week’s league meet will be hosted by West Ranch on Tuesday at El Cariso at 1 p.m.
