It was Sunday, July 12.

Michael Georgio, CEO of Gothic Landscape Inc., was having a conversation with his brother Jon about the family business.

Despite the effects of a national recession, Jon said, his brother "still felt incredibly blessed."

On Monday night, Michael went out to dinner with some of his employees.

"They had a blast," Jon said.

The next day, July 14, Michael died at his Valencia home from complications of emphysema, which he'd contracted in the past decade.

He was 53.

"He was a guy who personified our mission statement," Jon said. "‘Create true relationships with our clients through extraordinary service.'"

The landscaping company was founded in 1984 by Michael and Jon's parents, Louis and Judy.

Jon said as CEO, his brother helped lead the company from making $500,000 a year to a recent peak of $170 million in a year.

"He guided the company through a massive growth," he said.

Michael started working for their father's grading company at age 14, Jon said.

Once he graduated high school, he went to work full time for the family business.

With its headquarters in Valencia, Gothic Landscape also has offices in Las Vegas, Phoenix and the Riverside and San Diego areas.

Jon has been president since 2002, and his brother Ron is president of Gothic Grounds Management Inc.

Michael's life was not all about business, according to Jon.

"He was wildly generous with all that he had," he said, adding his brother was a frequent donor to several nonprofit organizations.

Above all, Jon said, "his first love was his daughters."

Michael is survived by his daughters, Ryann and Meghan Georgio and Christina Katchikian.
