Searching for peace of mind in today’s unpredictable world can be a difficult quest.

For certified angel therapy practitioner and Valencia resident Joan Darlene, no journey in life is too great, especially if it is one of self-discovery.

Through non-denominational spiritual healing methods — such as angel card readings and the practice of Reiki — Darlene is helping Santa Clarita Valley community members explore pathways to inner peace and the discovery of new joys in life.

Not your average deck of cards
“Believing in guardian angels is something you can find in almost every faith,” Darlene said. “Everyone has them and they are here to help guide us through our lives with perfect love.”

Since 2006, Darlene has studied under the teachings of Dr. Doreen Virtue, a spiritual psychologist who conducts experiential workshops teaching the practice of angel card readings.

After completing the spiritual counseling program offered by the American Board of Hypnotherapy and facilitated by Virtue, Darlene became certified to conduct the readings herself.

“Someone may feel stuck, lost, confused or hurt in their lives,” said Darlene. “Throughout the reading, angels guide people to reach their highest and best good. That is all that they want to help you do. I have watched as people begin to heal and grow through this experience and it is a truly beautiful thing.”

An angel card reading consists of selecting one card from the deck after asking the angels for guidance towards a certain aspect of life. “Whether you ask the question to yourself or out loud, the angels are there for you and will bring you the direction you need,” explained Darlene.

Each card in the deck dons the picture of an angel along with an individualized message for the person on the receiving end.
From concerns about finances in an unstable economy, to a desire to find true love, Darlene encourages the individual to ask their angels for support meant just for them.

“For a lot of people, this message is a validation or affirmation. The hope is that after the reading, each person feels more at ease and connected to their mind, body and spirit.”

Darlene offers further intuitive support during the remainder of the 60-minute private session, reinforcing the message received and helping the individual see the road ahead more clearly.

“Through talking about the message together, the process of healing begins and the person can feel closer to themselves, their angels and the world around them.”

A road less traveled

Darlene worked in unfulfilling jobs for 24 years before finding her calling.

“I always knew there was much more to me, but I was unsatisfied and felt stuck in what I was doing,” she said. “Then I thought, ‘I don’t want to live and die without really living,’ and that is when everything changed.”

After raising kids, tending to her household and working for others for many years, Darlene gathered the courage to leave the corporate world and take the next step in her walk of life. In 2003, she set off to rediscover the “Joanie” inside.

“It was my turn,” Darlene said.

Darlene studied with shamans, joined spiritual classes, read enlightening books and met with healers — all of which helped as she carved out a new path for herself.

“The more I learned, further doors would open for me and I knew I was supposed to be right where I was,” said Darlene. “All of a sudden, I found the joy in just living. I had discovered the beauty in everything, including myself.”

Darlene felt so good, she wanted to start giving back.

That’s when Darlene was introduced to Dr. Virtue and was taught to hone her skills through practices like centering energy and whole-body healing.

“I know that I am doing what I was meant for,” said Darlene. “To share your gifts with others and help however you can is the best part of being alive.”

What is Reiki?
In addition to angel card readings, Darlene administers Reiki, the hands-on technique used on the body for stress reduction and promotion of healing at Canyon Country’s Balance Point Spa.

From its ancient origins in Tibet, the practice was re-discovered in Japan in the late 1800’s by Sensei Mikao Usui who coined the term Reiki.

Translated from the Kanji characters that make up the word, Rei means spiritually guided and Ki means life-force energy.

Darlene has a strong opinion on why this form of healing is effective. She has been a   registered master teacher of Reiki since 2006.

“Reiki enhances anything we do,” said Darlene. “This is a technique that aids the body in releasing stress and tension by creating deep relaxation in the person receiving it.”

Whether she performs Reiki on people or their pets, Darlene explained life-force energy in an individual is what keeps human beings alive and must be kept flowing through the body without obstruction.

According to Darlene, blockages in energy can happen anytime and usually show up unannounced.

From back pain to a bad hair day, blockages can be induced by anger, pain, sickness or fear felt by the individual.

In order to assist in clearing the blockages, Darlene must focus on area of the body where energy stores up most.

“Our bodies has seven charkas, or energy centers that energy may get caught in,” said Darlene. “Blockages in these areas can lead to disease, illness and also emotional disorders. This practice can help promote health in each area, enhancing the person’s whole existence.”

Darlene explained the practice could be effective for illnesses such as diabetes, fibromyalgia, intestinal dysfunctions and more.

“I once treated a woman who had been using Western medical practices for problems with her intestines,” said Darlene. “She had been through countless procedures and 10 different doctors to find a way to feel better. She was at her wits end.”

The patient came to Darlene seeking relief.

“In a short time after our sessions started, she returned to me and reported that the problem had diminished,” Darlene said. “I am constantly seeing examples of how this work helps people.”

After a brief consultation between Darlene and her client, the technique is administered with the client fully clothed and laying comfortably on a massage table.

During a 60-minute or 90-minute session, Darlene uses healing properties and therapeutic touch to gently massage each area.

“By doing this, we are allowing the energy to flow through the body once again,” said Darlene. “I have seen people actually transform as they feel the energy release. It’s always so inspiring.”

The technique is gaining recognition due to its success rate among recipients, even being used as a supplemental form of healing in various hospital operating rooms around the world. Additionally, a growing interest in the practice is forming in offices of chiropractors, medical doctors, physiotherapists and psychologists.

“I believe that just like your car needs a tune-up and oil change, so does your body,” said Darlene. “We need to keep things flowing clearly so we can run better. We can then tune into peace and harmony.”

Cards that come through
“Sitting next to Joan is like being near the Grand Canyon,” said Venita Louise. “She has so many wonderful gifts.”

Louise first met Darlene in 2004 and the two became fast friends, bonding in their mutual appreciation for the holistic arts.

In 2007, tragedy struck when Louise’s 25-year-old son took his own life.

Wrought with grief and despair, Louise turned to Darlene for readings that she felt could reconnect her with her son.

“This healing work comforted me as I walked through the darkest days of my life,” Louise said.

Through the process, Louise was able to put one foot in front of the other and continue on her journey.

With guidance and encouragement from Darlene, Louise eventually found new light on her path.

“Last year I met a man who has become a lovely part of my life, although I have to admit that I didn’t think it would happen,” said Louise, who has been single for the past 15 years. “Three months earlier, Joan told me he was near and she even described what he looked like. I am so comfortable with him, it’s like I’ve known him all my life.”

With guidance from the cards, Louise has even discovered a deeper appreciation for music, which she says heals her heart the most.

“Joan’s readings help me walk through the doors that have opened for me,” said Louise. “It amazes me that the cards reflect what is going on in my life at the time. The messages that show themselves, coupled with Joan’s intuitiveness, always give me a feeling of confidence.”

“We all need to remember to take care of ourselves emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually,” said Darlene. “These practices can help us discover new paths inside, clearing out what we don’t need anymore and making way for lives filled with peace and love.”
