On Sunday, Aug.16, the 14th annual "Downed Officer Support Ride" will kick off from the Westfield Valencia Town Center Mall with a memorial ceremony starting at 8:45 a.m. and the ride starting at 9:15 a.m.

This annual motorcycle event, which organizers believe to be the largest law enforcement motorcycle event in Southern California, raises funds to assist the families of law enforcement and firefighters who have been slain or injured while in active service within their respective departments or who die of any cause while in the active service of their communities.

The Foundation will also assist these families with expenses relate to catastrophic diseases.

This year has been another tragic year for the men and women of law and fire enforcement in California. We lost many brothers and sisters to line-of-duty deaths this year.

This year's event will begin with a memorial ceremony at the Westfield Valencia Town Center Mall (Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway) at the east end of the mall. There will be honor guards, singing of the National Anthem and our Memorial Roll Call.

Among those scheduled to attend the event are Los Angeles County Sheriff Leroy Baca; retired CHP Commissioner Mike Brown; LAPD Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell and Deputy Chief Michel Moore; and Orange County Assistant Sheriff Michael Hillmann, as well as officials from the cities of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles and the county of Los Angeles.

At approximately 9:15 a.m. roughly 1,500 riders will leave on an 100-mile poker ride and end up at Mann Biomedical Park off Rye Canyon and Kelly Johnson Parkway in Santa Clarita, where there will be a live music by Girl Up Front, a catered BBQ lunch, vendors and raffle prizes.

The Golden Stars Law Enforcement Skydiving Team will perform at 12:30 p.m.

Prior to the ride, there will be two escorted pre-rides, one leaving the Panera Bread Restaurant on Ventura Boiulevard in Studio City at 7 a.m. and one leaving the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station at 6:45 a.m.

The Downed Officers Support Foundation is an IRS 501 (3c) charity totally supported by donations from the public.
