As students shop for backpacks, lunchboxes and school supplies, Rio Vista Elementary PTA is busy preparing for the annual Welcome Back Night, Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The event invites returning and new families to come and find out who his or her teacher will be, take a tour of the school, receive information about school lunches and programs and much more.

The Santa Clarita Valley School Food Service Agency will be available to answer questions about school lunch programs, pricing and nutrition.

Families will also have the opportunity to purchase all new school spirit wear, slushies and bake sale items.

The school has put on the event for the past six years.

"Our initial thought was to provide a night for families and students to have a social event to get reacquainted with friends as well as calm any student fears about the first day of school. Students become familiar with where they are going, where the library and office is, restrooms, and MPR. It really seems to help for the first day,"  said Stacy Peterson, PTA volunteer.

Peterson said about 400 families show up.

School maps, PTA volunteer opportunities and the new safe walking route to school will be discussed.

Rio Vista lost its bus transportation this year. The school anticipates many walkers and is encouraging parents to carpool.

"Parents have a lot of concern, so we will be providing the safe routes for the walkers, letting them know where the crossing guards will be," she said.

The PTA works with the school to make Welcome Back Night an informative and enjoyable evening.

"Families love it because they can receive the information and talk to PTA about questions and concerns they have. The evening is an invaluable night, for both the parent and family," she said.

School begins Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 8:30 a.m.
