Illogical answers

Regarding Peter Kavounas' opinion column, "Got questions about water rates? Logical answers await," Aug. 2:
I am sorry, Peter, with all due respect to you and all of the elected and staff officials of the various water authorities in Santa Clarita, I truly believe the impending rate increases on the Santa Clarita Water District ratepayers are a) not a done deal and b) never had to happen in the first place.

As many who have studied this matter as thoroughly as I have know, these rate increases are the direct result of poor planning on the part of the Castaic Lake Water Agency and its subsidiaries.

Ratepayers in Santa Clarita are being asked to shoulder these increases in a time of great financial strife because everyone from our own water agency to the State Water Project have failed to invest in the upgrading and expansion of Southern California's water infrastructure.

As I continue to study the rate-increase narrative, I appreciate Kavounas and others weighing in on why they believe the increase is critical. But I cannot for the life of me understand why the agencies involved are not taking any blame for the predicament that has led to the increasing cost of water delivery in Southern California.

I am further mystified by the complete lack of narrative on the subject of correcting the main problem causing rates to increase in the first place.

While water hoarders up north continue to use a small fish as a scapegoat in their plan to deny Southern California the water resources it needs, the very people (board members and staff of the various water authorities) stand by helplessly as the sham continues, unaddressed.

I suspect that a vocal and irritated segment of the ratepayers in Santa Clarita will be turning out for the Sept. 9 hearing and will be looking not only for answers to what happened but also to how you'll keep it from happening again.

I hope you and your colleagues are ready with some answers.
