Questionable vet service in our valley

I am questioning the policies of one of our veterinarian clinics in Santa Clarita.

I have personal knowledge of a small dog being seen by a veterinarian employed there.

He was diagnosed with possible indigestion, X-rayed and sent home.

He is two years old and was not eating, vomiting and listless.

When the animal got worse and had a distended abdominal area, the owner returned to the clinic the following week and a diagnosis of an internal mass was made.

The owner was advised to leave him there at the clinic.

Later that day, the owner received a call to come and pick up the animal before 6 p.m. and take him to a veterinary hospital that stayed open all night because their veterinary clinic could not accommodate animals with IVs overnight.

She was told to bring the dog back the next morning when they reopened.

This seemed strange but the owner had no choice but to take her pet with two tubes connected to it to an all-night emergency hospital.

The doctor at the all-night hospital told her the dog needed emergency surgery to save its life.

This was determined after the doctor viewed two X-rays, one taken the week before and one that day at the original veterinary clinic.

They both showed there was an obstruction blocking the duodenum (this was missed by the original vet twice).

Since there are no board-certified veterinary surgeons in Santa Clarita, she would need to take her pet to Los Angeles to ASG (Animal Specialty Group) for immediate emergency surgery.

She called ahead and a surgeon was called in immediately. The surgery was done that night.

The dog stayed for five days; all turned out well.

The actions of the original hospital are hard to believe.

I am writing this to alert pet owners of some veterinarians’ policies.

Usually, if there is no one in attendance for the night, an attendant is brought in at the owner’s expense.

I have had pets all of my life and I have never had to transport them to another veterinarian in the evening and return them in the morning.
