Open House launches 2010 ‘Relay For Life’

Local residents who are interested in being involved in the American Cancer Society's SCV Relay For Life 2010 are invited to attend a Committee Open House 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Kaiser Permanente, 27107 Tourney Rd., Valencia.

Members of the committee who plan the local 24-hour walking event will welcome prospective new committee members and seek volunteers to fill open chair and sub-committee chair positions.

"This event gives people an opportunity to come out and see where they can help plan one of the biggest fundraising events in the Santa Clarita Valley," explained Jen Minard, chair for Relay 2010.

Committee business will not be conducted at the Open House, but prospective volunteers will be introduced to the many aspects of organizing a major fundraising event with an all-volunteer planning committee.

The Open House event will be held in the large second floor waiting area at the local Kaiser facility, after the last patients are gone for the day. Tables will represent the various volunteer functions required for Relay, and job descriptions will explain the responsibilities of each committee.

Past or current committee members will staff each table, with an eye toward recruiting new committee members.

"We don't want a committee member to take on their position all by themselves," Minard explained. "The Open House is meant to help committee chairs find a sub-committee to help with each aspect of the overall responsibility."

Prospective committee members who cannot attend the Open House will find a "Help Wanted" section on the local Relay Web site at

Last year's SCV Relay brought in more than $562,000 to support the battle against cancer in its many forms, the second time n a row that the local Relay has brought in record funds over the $500,000 mark.

The dinner and silent auction will follow a Tapas Barcelona theme with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and information is available by calling (818) 458-6828 or e-mailing
