When Monique Torres heard that her close friends house had been lost in the Acton fires last week, she knew it was time to do something.

"Our school is very small and so is our community," Torres said. "So, when you hear about this it's not just someone you go to school with. It's someone you talk to everyday and someone you see every day ... It's someone who is close to you."

Torres was moved by the plight of her friend Juana Segundo, whose house was destroyed during the fires. Torres is organizing a dinner and donation drive for Segundo and her family at Palmdale City Hall on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Torres called Segundo last week shortly before Segundo and her family evacuated.

Segundo was unreachable for comment Friday.

"Her neighbor's house had already started burning down," Torres said.

Shortly after, Segundo's house followed suit.

"She doesn't have anything at all," Torres said. "I'm trying to get as much as I can for her and her family."

The news hit home for Torres, who formed a friendship with Segundo about three years ago.

"She's really fun and trustworthy," Torres said. "I can count on her."
