Sheriff's deputies arrested a man Wednesday morning who led them on a chase in a car he stole from a Saugus house last week, authorities said.

Horacio Covarrubias, 21, of Saugus was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto, receiving stolen property and felony evasion, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Mark Hershey. Covarrubias was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Just before 9:30 a.m., a deputy spotted the 2003 Honda Accord Covarrubias was driving on Bouquet Canyon Road and recognized it as a stolen car, Hershey said.

Coincidentally, the deputy had been assigned to the related burglary.

"That was luck because he was the one handling the case," Hershey said. "He did a good job finding the car used in the burglary."

The deputy trailed the car for a couple of minutes before the chase began on Centurion Way, Hershey said.

Covarrubias led the pursuing deputy onto McBean Parkway. He sped up to 70 mph, prompting authorities to cancel the chase out of concern for other motorists, Hershey said.

Deputies caught up with Covarrubias after he pulled into the Westfield Valencia Town Center parking lot minutes later, Hershey said.

Once deputies blocked him in, he fled the car and ran less than 100 yards before he stopped and was arrested at 9:39 a.m., Hershey said.

The car had been stolen during a Sept. 2 burglary of a Saugus house on the 27000 block of Crookshank Drive, Hershey said. The homeowner returned to her house and found her television, laptop computer, car keys and car stolen. She was also missing some purses and women's clothing.
