If you get married or you become a proud new parent you won't have drive out of Santa Clairta to file the necessary paperwork.

At least that's the plan for Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, who called for a study to be done for a new registrar's office in the North County.

"We want to make it as convenient for people as possible," said Tony Bell, a spokesman for Antonovich's office. "This is a really convenient upgrade for the residents of Santa Clarita."

A feasibility study into building a new Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk office in, or near, Santa Clarita was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

The motion also calls for planners to assess the feasibility of a second registrar office in the East San Gabriel Valley.

New businesses would also be able to file the required paperwork at the North County office.

In a press release issued by his department, Antonovich said: "New business owners in the Santa Clarita Valley area are currently faced with a drive of over 20 miles to the Van Nuys office, or over 40 miles to the Lancaster office to search and apply for fictitious names."

Bell said the study and its findings should be ready by September.

The approved motion Tuesday directs the county Chief Executive Officer William T. Fujioka to report back to the Board during final changes made to the county budget in September.

"Our hope is to increase the potential for people to do business," he said, adding it is also the hope of county planners that a satellite office in the North County would cut down on traffic through the Newhall Pass.

"It's going to affect more than just one or two people," Bell said. "We think it would serve quite a number of people.

"We think reaching out to the public is good for improving efficiency. It keep folks off the freeway."

The Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk has its headquarters in Norwalk and satellite offices in Lancaster, Van Nuys, Beverly Hills, East Los Angeles, the Florence-Firestone area and at LAX.
