A handful of downtown Newhall businesses are bringing art to Main Street this week with the start of the Third Thursday Art Walk.

From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, local artists will have their works on display at Capelli Salon, Cookbooks Plus, OutWest and El Trocadero.

Sabina Fetter, owner of Capelli Salon, said she got the idea when she came across an advertisement for the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk.

“We don’t have the art galleries they have, but this is supposed to be (Santa Clarita’s) arts and theater district,” she said.

Fetter said she’ll be hosting a wine and cheese reception at her salon for the kickoff of the art walk. The event also coincides with the weekly farmers’ market hosted by the city from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the intersection of Market and Main streets.

“It’s a real grassroots effort,” Fetter said. “It’s something that we’re putting together on our own.
“Hopefully it will keep growing.”

Fetter said artists were found by putting out a call for submissions to local arts associations.

The jury that votes on artists’ work comprises Fetter, Bobbie Jean Bell of OutWest, Mimi Hiller of Cookbooks Plus, Ovington Michael Owston of the Repertory East Playhouse and TimBen Boydston of the Canyon Theatre Guild.

Fetter said she’d like to see the monthly art walk include everything from paintings to performance art.

Capelli Salon is located at 24253 Main St., near the corner of 6th Street. For more information visit
