The fourth annual Santa Clarita Valley "Light the Night® Walk" to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's battle against cancer is set for Saturday, Oct. 17 at Bridgeport Park in Valencia starting with check-in at 4:30 p.m.

Returning as local Walk co-chairs are Gloria Mercado-Fortine and husband Bruce Fortine, who e-mail-blasted an invitaiton to members of the community to sign up and participate by joining the "Fortine Team."

"Last year, with the support of our local companies, residents and friends like you we raised (more than) $243,000," the Fortines wrote. "This year, with your help, we can pass this mark.

"We invite you to join us in our mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families."

The need is critical, the Fortines noted:

* Every four minutes, someone new is diagnosed with blood cancer;
* Every 10 minutes, someone dies;
* Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children under the age of 20.

The "Light the Night® Walk" is an evening of fun, refreshments, music, entertainment, inspiration, kids' games, camaraderie and hope.

It stands apart from other events as a visually stunning display of hope: survivors carry illuminated white balloons, friends and
family red balloons as a sign of support, and gold balloons in remembrance of a loved one lost to blood cancer.

The "Light the Night® Walk" is the fastest-growing signature fund and awareness-raising event in the United States.

Participants walk along a gentle, two-mile route, carrying lighted balloons -- white for survivors and red for supporters. Before and after the walk, participants are invited to share in food, entertainment and fun.

It's a memorable experience we hope you'll share with family, friends, co-workers, colleagues and neighbors.
