Hospital Union Contract Up for Renewal

About 500 nursing assistants, clerks and technicians at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital are set to vote today on a proposed new contract that includes wage increases.

According to hospital representatives, the new proposal with the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America union also includes more time off, the ability to cash out their paid time off, increased shift differentials and bonuses for staff who achieve specialty professional certifications.
"We were a little disappointed the hospital didn't propose more on the lower end of the pay scale, but aside from that, we think it's a fair agreement," said John Hovis, president of the union. "It's as good a contract as we can get at the table."
The United Electrical union includes Licensed Vocational Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, ward clerks, radiology technicians, respiratory therapists and information technology employees.
The hospital has employed United Electrical union members since 2000.
"Currently we give employees who meet basic expectations a 3.25 percent wage increase every year," said Mark Puleo, the hospital's chief human resources officer and leader of the management negotiation team, in a statement.
"We propose to hold that rate, but we further propose that employees who exceed expectations or are outstanding receive greater recognition, so we proposed a rate of 4.75 and 5.75 respectively," he said. "In fact these are the highest percentage wage increases the hospital has ever offered."
