Seraphs’ loss shakes up poll

Moorpark moves into the top spot, while Valencia climbs up to No. 2

The CIF-Southern Section Northern Division doesn’t belong to St. Bonaventure yet.

The Seraphs tumbled two spots in this week’s poll to No. 3 after a 24-23 overtime loss to Bishop Amat last Friday.

That loss gave Moorpark the No. 1 spot and moved Valencia to No. 2.

The Vikings are still the only Foothill League team in the top 10.

But St. Bonaventure still might be the best team in the division.

The Seraphs have had to run the gauntlet thus far.

Bishop Amat is the No. 12 team in the state.

Three of St. Bonaventure’s opponents thus far are top-50 teams in the state, according to

Valencia, though, has an opportunity to show just how strong it is with a Saturday matchup against the No. 37 team in the state — Loyola.

Santa Clarita Christian climbed a spot to No. 4 in the Division I 8-Man poll.

Here’s how the Northern Division’s top 10 fared last week:

No. 1 Moorpark

The Musketeers moved to 4-0 with a 35-7 victory over Calabasas last Friday. Moorpark jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Austin Edmonson ran for 93 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns. Moorpark plays 4-0 Newbury Park this Friday.

No. 2 Valencia

Valencia pounded Santa Monica 63-7 last Friday and plays 2-2 Loyola on Saturday.

No. 3 St. Bonaventure

The Seraphs were tied 17-17 after regulation with Bishop Amat. They scored, then missed the extra point in overtime. Bishop Amat scored, then made the extra point. St. Bonny running back Devon Blackledge ran for 138 yards on 26 carries. Bishop Amat managed only 159 yards of total offense. The Lancers were helped by a 91-yard kickoff return and an 87-yard interception return by Darien Johnson. At 4-1, the Seraphs have a bye this week.

No. 4 Westlake

Westlake continues to be one of the most impressive teams in the division as the Warriors throttled a respected Thousand Oaks team 43-17 last Friday. Tavior Mowry ran for 135 yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns. Westlake, now 4-0, plays 1-3 Agoura on Friday.

No. 5 Newbury Park

Newbury Park is now 4-0 after a 55-12 win over Simi Valley last Friday. The Panthers were up 48-6 at halftime. Newbury Park had 6.5 sacks in the game and was led offensively by Jake Geringer, who threw for 151 yards and three touchdowns, and Cameron Roberson, who ran for 145 yards on 11 carries. Newbury Park gets Moorpark Friday in this week’s best Northern Division matchup.

No. 6 Oxnard

Oxnard is 4-0 after shutting out San Marcos 28-0 last Friday. Henry Fernandez had a big game for Oxnard, taking the opening kickoff 94 yards, intercepting a pass and rushing for 90 yards. Oxnard plays 1-3 Ventura on Friday.

No. 7 Atascadero

Atascadero defeated Hueneme 29-21 last Friday to move to 4-1. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 19-0 lead going into halftime. Running back Adam Lopez ran for 123 yards. Atascadero gets a bye this week.

No. 8 Channel Islands

After a bye last week, 4-0 Channel Islands plays 3-1 Santa Paula on Friday.

No. 9 Hueneme

Hueneme is now 4-1 after a 29-21 loss to Atascadero. Hueneme has a bye this week.

No. 10 Arroyo Grande

After a bye last week, 3-1 Arroyo Grande gets 1-3 San Marcos on Friday.
