SNAP Flag Football is holding a tournament this Sunday at College of the Canyons.

The non-contact event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cougar Stadium, featuring three rounds of play on four different fields.

The COC football team will also be running a skills clinic during the event.
The SNAP program, which stands for Special Needs Athletes and Peers, is run by LETMESAIL, Inc., and it matches three special needs athletes with a peer, who will serve as the team’s quarterback.

“Of course we want the physical activity and the exercise of the game,” said LETMESAIL executive director Pam Sorlagas, “but we want that social connection.”

The peer athletes will hail from either the COC football team or Canyon High School, and they will provide instruction.

“We have had some of the same Canyon High athletes come back for all three years because they get so much out of the experience,” Sorlagas said.

LETMESAIL said the event will feature teams from as far away as San Diego.

Sorlagas said the organization is for teens and adults with disabilities, and it provides social, recreational and educational programs.

She also said the interaction between the athletes and peers is just as important as the competition.

“It’s not just our client-athletes that gain from this,” she said. “It’s also the young people from the high schools and COC. For our athletes with disabilities, they’re getting to interact with the football players and learn from them.”

The SNAP teams will also hold an exhibition game on Nov. 14 at halftime of the COC game against Bakersfield.

The program is also offering SNAP Cheer, in which members of the Canyon High cheerleading squad teach LETMESAIL athletes some moves.
