It was reasonable for parents to opt out

Regarding ("Opt-out disbelief," Sept. 20) Linda Storli-Koontz's not being able to "imagine parents opting their high school students out of hearing" President Barack Obama's speech to students: It wouldn't have happened if Obama's Department of Education hadn't sent a "lesson plan" directly to schools asking students to write an essay on "how can I help President Obama."

Also the NEA (teachers union) sent a memo to its teacher members directing them to use the speech to support Obama and his programs. Now, presidents Reagan and both Bushes gave speeches to students without any fanfare, because they did not, unlike Obama, seek to politicize the speech.

Linda also claims parents who opted out put "us back 100 years." Oh, come on, don't you think that's a little bit dramatic? Also

Linda, it's the prerogative of parents (not the president, department of education, school board, teachers union or teachers) to decide if they want to have their children subjected to partisan, political propaganda as part of their school classwork.
