A first-time candidate and incumbent who teamed up in the Castaic Union School District board election took the top votes Tuesday in the race for three open seats.

Victor Torres, a first-time candidate, said he was pleased to have teamed up with incumbent Laura Pearson.

"She's been very committed to the kids and (to) serving the community," he said.

Torres took home the most votes Tuesday night with 1,010 ballots in the election. Pearson won 972 votes, a difference of 38 votes.

The two credit their dedication and involvement to the Castaic community for the wins.

"I think people realize that I've been involved for years," Torres said.

Susan Christopher, who ran an unsuccessful campaign four years ago, snagged the third open seat.

"I think my qualifications are more or less than same from four years ago," she said.

She credits her efforts to being in the community and name recognition. Christopher said she didn't want to run her campaign with another candidate.

"I just felt that it was the right choice to run independently," she said.

John Zaring came in fourth after Christopher with 417 votes.

Nearly 450 votes separate Zaring from Christopher.

Zaring said he's not sure if he'll run again in two years, but plans to stay involved with the district and will do whatever he can to support the three winners.

"I'm going to do whatever I can as a parent to help the district as we face these troubled times," he said.

Zaring said he hopes to bring Castaic out of isolation and integrate the community more into the Santa Clarita Valley.

"I hope my campaign has done something to change the mentality here and if it has, I would consider my candidacy a victory," he said.

Seher Awan finished last with 312 votes.

The experience taught Awan hands-on lessons and she remains open to running again in the future.

"I definitely got a taste of what politics is like," she said.
