The Hart girls varsity volleyball team knew it was in for a tough match — being far away from home and facing off with a league champion.

But Laguna Beach gave the Indians more frustration to deal with by celebrating its Senior Night during the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

The result was Hart got off to a slow start and fell to the Orange Coast League champions in three games — 25-10, 25-22, 25-19.

“They threw us off-guard that first game,” said Hart head coach Mary Krisan. “We were pretty slow in the first game as far as energy. The second game, we came back.”

At one point in the second game, Hart’s Breena Beckett made seven blocks in a row, flustering the Laguna Beach offense.

Yet the Breakers came back and ultimately ended the Indians’ season.

Beckett had six kills and 10 blocks and Allison Toledo contributed 11 digs.

Both are seniors.

“Extremely,” is how much Hart will miss the pair next season, Krisan said. “Is that short and sweet right there?”

Hart is losing six seniors and will have six returners back next season.

Of the six, four saw significant playing time in 2009 — Brittani Elser, Anne Baker, Paulina Hechavarria and Anissa Robinson.

Hart finished the season at 12-5.
