Same-sex ruling

In response to the article "Same-Sex Ruling Stirs SCV" (May 16, 2008), by Parimal M. Rohit and Katherine Geyer, I begin with one simple question to the readers of this newspaper: When so many Christian leaders assert that "marriage has been a union between a man and a woman since time immemorial," what Bible are they reading that has no mention of the many Hebrews who had multiple wives and concubines on the side?

Or is it just a slip of their memory that marriage has changed in concept from age to age, culture to culture? Even now there are many prominent cultures in which neither a man nor a woman has a choice regarding whom they marry. That tradition has certainly changed in Western and Eastern cultures from which many Americans are descended.

If it weren't for the obvious lapses of memory regarding the laws prohibiting interracial marriages, it would be unnecessary to mention the change of this once overwhelmingly popular attitude toward building a more compassionate and mature civilization.

And lest we forget Proposition 187 and the popular vote of the people that was passed in order to, among other things, prevent innocent children from obtaining hospital care and education just because their parents were not in the USA with proper documentation. The State Supreme Court overturned that decision as unconstitutional. It's been many years since, and there is no evidence this attitude was right because of a popular vote.

Our Constitution's purpose is to hold us to our highest ideals. What a great concept. Love for our neighbors and ourselves.
