The West Ranch girls volleyball team lost 3-1 to the visiting Marymount Sailors in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A playoffs Thursday night.

Marymount, the Sunshine League champions, defeated the Wildcats by scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-12, and 25-16.

West Ranch head coach Nate Sparks said his team knew coming into the match that it was going to be tough and although his squad lost some momentum in the third and fourth games, he was happy with the performance.

“I’m very happy with how my team played today,” Sparks said. “We showed a lot of heart and it was a great match overall.”

West Ranch didn’t seem to have an answer for Marymount’s senior outside hitter Jennifer Bonilla, who knocked down a match-high 19 kills to go along with 23 digs. Senior outside hitter Samantha Hirschmann had five service aces and 11 kills for the Sailors (18-5).

Marymount head coach Cari Klein said her team’s passing worked well in the match, but also cited 12 serving errors as a disappointment.

“We had really great passing tonight,” Klein said. “We had very few passing errors.”

West Ranch senior outside hitter Allison Summers led the Wildcats, knocking down 16 kills and digging up 13 balls. Junior outside hitter

Hannah Orlandi had 10 kills and junior setter Tani Slauson recorded 33 assists.

Summers, who is University of Georgia-bound, said her team fought hard.

“I’m really proud of my team,” Summers said. “We never gave up.

“It’s not going to sink in yet that it’s my last game,” Summers said. “I’m going to miss every single girl on this team.”
West Ranch (22-10) is losing four seniors.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better senior group,” Sparks said. “They carried this team as far as they could have gone. This is the best we’ve done yet,”
