Get a grip, Lunetta

I read Steven Lunetta’s commentary (“Uncle Earl and cyber bullies,” Nov. 16) with amusement mixed with considerable astonishment.

Lunetta and his “Uncle Earl” apparently are of the opinion that HR1966 is “just another example of Obama and his minions trying to create a police state here in America.”

I read the wording of the bill, too, and see nothing that raises any alarms. I wonder if Lunetta protested as much over the illegal unauthorized wiretapping during the Bush administration, or the “extraordinary renditions” carried out by the Bush administration on innocent people, or perhaps the firing of numerous attorneys general for the crime of not toeing the Republican party line?

It seems the “police state” was voted out last November, Lunetta, despite your complicit silence on those matters. But God forbid if the Democrats try to pass a law to protect the vulnerable from vicious, vindictive cyber-bullying. That’s the parents’ responsibility.

One assumes you are a parent and spend all of your waking hours hovering over your child’s shoulder monitoring their every activity, right Lunetta?

Lunetta’s diatribe seems a tad simplistic when one considers many public watchdog groups will be observing closely, including the despicable American Civil Liberties Union. And even if those groups are all asleep at the wheel, I seriously doubt the Supreme Court will allow any law that is grossly unconstitutional to stay on the books, since I guarantee that it will be challenged in court.

Any new law dealing with new circumstances requires fine tuning over time. To screech “police state” is disingenuous and is “playing to the back row” of the intended audience.

Perhaps the cyber offenders can instead be sent to the Democratic “death camps” the Obama police state has in store for us?
Get a grip, Lunetta.
