McKeon out of touch

Buck McKeon may have some admirable qualities, but he was off base in blaming Democrats for gas prices.

First, the steps he mentioned as the Republican Plan would take at least a decade to make any impact. Republicans did have the six years before the Democratic majority to save us from the impending crisis. And what happened to the multi-billion dollar tax break we already gave big oil to do those same things?
In addition to the $4-plus gas, the $5-plus diesel price is a broader problem as it affects our transportation-dependent economy.

One clear problem is the unregulated speculation in oil futures, which is rumored to have increased the price of oil by 30 percent. It would appear that the big-moneyed speculators have moved from the under-regulated hedge funds and the under-regulated financial and home mortgage areas and now to oil.

Clearly, there is a lack of perception and oversight in protecting our citizens and our economy.
When one bubble bursts, the big money finds another opening.

Of course, we do have big problems with getting more oil without damaging our environment. And we are pursuing alternatives such as corn-based fuels and fuel efficient cars. Ethanol production is an example of how this fast-changing crisis has implications even to our own food supply. Ethanol uses about as much energy as the energy it provides and although it may reduce, in the margins, oil consumption, its recent production increase does give us insight into the unrecognized difficulties of easy answers.

Few of us can justify a new fuel-efficient car purchase just because of $4 gas. Instead, we drive less and use public transportation more. Seems like we are all waiting for the bubble to burst. In the meantime, we have an opportunity to change out the dim-witted politicians who demonize those who struggle to recognize and provide leadership in solving our critical problems.
