The holidays are upon us once again and a host of fantastic opportunities perfectly suited to the season are available to all of Santa Clarita in downtown Newhall.

From eclectic shopping opportunities to great holiday activities, downtown Newhall and its surrounding historical sites are sure to offer something for everyone to enjoy this season.

The holiday festivities kick off Dec. 4 with the arrival of the Metrolink Holiday Toy Express. Help spread holiday cheer by bringing a new, unwrapped toy to the Newhall Metrolink station at 7:30 p.m,, located at 24300 Railroad Ave.

All toys will be collected by Santa, Mrs. Claus and their friends aboard the glittering Metrolink Holiday Toy Express. Decorated with holiday displays and 50,000 twinkling lights, the 450-ton train will deliver a live musical performance and community fun to residents of all ages. All toys will be donated to the Southland Firefighters’ “Spark of Love” toy drive.

The fun continues on Dec. 4 with a community dance at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, located at 22900 Market St. Held from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., the dance allows residents to mingle with family and friends in a fun, social atmosphere.

Community members are invited to contact the Senior Center at (661) 259-9444 for more information.

On Dec. 5, bring the family for a host of activities and events at historic William S. Hart Park, beginning with the annual Literacy and Arts Festival. Held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the free festival will provide entertainment, education and activities designed to encourage, promote and expose the importance of literacy and the performing arts to people of all ages.

More about the festival is available at

Hart Mansion will also set the stage for another festive event held in honor of the season — Cowboys and Carols. Head over to the mansion at 7 p.m. on Dec. 5 to take in an intimate evening of joyous entertainment, refreshments and great company in celebration of the holidays and what would be Western movie legend William S. Hart’s 145th birthday. Call the Friends of Hart Park at (661) 254-4584 for more information.

Step back in time to the holidays of old when historic Heritage Junction opens its doors for a free Christmas Open House. From noon to 5 p.m. on Dec. 12, visitors will be able to view Heritage Junction’s historic homes and classic train station decorated in the spirit of the season, free of charge.

Call (661) 254-1275 for more information on this richly entertaining and educational opportunity.

Throughout the month of December, residents can attend fantastic performances the entire family will enjoy at theaters located right on Main Street in downtown Newhall.

Take in a showing of a beloved holiday tale, “Miracle on 34th Street,” at the Canyon Theatre Guild, or the fantastically funny “M*A*S*H” at the Repertory East Playhouse. Visit and for respective show times and ticket information.

In addition to setting the stage for festive activities and theatrical performances, downtown Newhall remains a great place to “shop local” in style.

Residents can check items from holiday wish lists while browsing the diverse and interesting shops lining Main Street’s newly revamped boardwalk. Whatever your needs this holiday season — from shopping to entertainment — downtown Newhall’s got you covered.
