Still not convinced on cameras

Thanks for printing my letter regarding the dangers involved with the red light cameras (“Tear down the cameras,” Nov. 20).

However, I was surprised you were so quick to add an editor’s note regarding Santa Clarita’s claim that collisions have been reduced since the cameras were installed. Los Angeles officials have also been telling us that the cameras have reduced collisions in their city.

Why don’t you begin an investigation of your own modeled on the study performed by Channel 2 in Los Angeles?

Channel 2 found the total number of collisions had been reduced. However, the dirty little secret was that the number of fatal collisions had increased.

That is the true measure of success. Saving lives is more important than reducing the number of fender benders.

I still say the cameras should be torn down unless it can be proven they are saving lives. Even then, do we really want Big Brother to be watching us?
