City Council may expand budget

Meeting to be Frank Ferry’s last as mayor

The City Council will decide whether to add $10 million to this year's budget at Tuesday's meeting.

It's a normal procedural step in which the city adjusts its budget to cover new costs every year, said Deputy City Manager Darren Hernandez.

A majority of the additional costs are paid through state and federal loans, he said. This year's changes are relatively minor considering Santa Clarita's total budget is about $250 million, Hernandez said.

Some additional costs are a combination of routine maintenance and the increased cost of doing business with Los Angeles County.
To balance their budget, the county is hiking rates to clean up road kill and gather stray animals in Santa Clarita. As a result, the county is billing the city an additional $400,000.

This year the county has increased its rates for dead animal pickup by about 75 percent alone.

Tuesday's council meeting will also be the last for Frank Ferry as mayor. Councilwoman Laurene Weste is accepted to be sworn in as the new mayor after a short ceremony, said city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz. A new mayor is selected from the council every year, she said.
