Cell phones for soldiers drive
Hart High School cheerleaders will collect old cell phones for soldiers, which are recycled with funds used to purchase prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops serving overseas, throughout the month of December. Holiday celebration at Riuox Park
Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation will host  a Holiday Celebration 10 a.m. - noon Saturday, Dec. 12 at Richard Riuox Park, 26233 W. Book signing at Vino 100 in Valencia
The History Chef Book Signing Event Tour will be held 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12.  Author Andrew Caldwell will autograph copies of his book, “Their Last Suppers” at  Vino 100, 28112 Newhall Ranch Road, Valencia, in the HighRidge Crossing Center at Copper Hill Drive. “Their Last Suppers” is a trilogy of historical cookery books that looks at the lives of over 60 of history’s most legendary figures. Caldwell explores the final meals consumed by such notables as Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Abraham Lincoln, Elvis, Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson.  “Their Last Suppers” is only available through Vino 100 stores before its nationwide hardcover release in March 2010. Docent classes for Placerita Center
Placerita Canyon Nature Center Volunteer-Naturalist Training Program Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Nature Center 19152 West Placerita Canyon Road, Newhall. Sessions run from 9 a.m. -noon Tuesdays and Thursdays through March 11 with a graduation dinner planned for March 27. Topics of the program include the study of native plants, ecology, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, geology, valley history and interpretive techniques. No special background is required.  Other volunteer opportunities are available that do not require the nine-week training program.
