The greatest individual season in Santa Clarita Valley prep golf history has ended just short of the ultimate goal.

Southern California high school champion and Hart High senior Johnny MacArthur finished tied for fifth Tuesday at the CIF-State Golf Championship at Santa Maria Country Club.

The 18-year-old shot a 2-over 74.

MacArthur said he just didn't have his game together Tuesday, despite confidence about the course.

"Today I came out, I don't know, I struggled," he said while searching for words to describe his performance.

Jeff Kang of Sunny Hills High became the state champion, shooting a 2-under 70, two strokes in front of second place Ryan Corbett of Monte Vista High.

MacArthur's day started in solid fashion, as he birdied the first hole after nearly eagling.

He missed a 15-foot putt for eagle.

The Foothill League Most Valuable Player then had two near-birdies on his next two holes, one putt even lipping out of the cup.

After he settled for par on both, his round went south.

MacArthur said he had a great drive on No. 4, but he ended up bogeying the hole.

He went double-bogey, bogey on his next pair.

"That was pretty much the golf tournament for me," MacArthur said.

He bogeyed again on No. 10 to fall to 4-over.

MacArthur said the conditions reaked havoc on his game.

It was windy in Santa Maria and the pin placements were diffcult; the Hart golfer describing them as "slippery."

He managed to birdie holes 15 and 18 to get to 2-over on the day.

MacArthur hadn't shot above 69 in the postseason, with a 5-under 67 coming on Thursday to win the CIF-SCGA Southern Regional High School Championship, otherwise known as the Southern California Championship.

It's been nearly two months since MacArthur has shot in the 70s as he turned in a 76 on April 14. Since that point, he's caught fire.

His last two postseason finishes were second and first place respectively.

The best finish ever for a Santa Clarita prep golfer, prior to MacArthur's Southern California title, was Hart's Jason Gore finishing as the runner-up in the event in 1989.

Gore went on to win a national championship at Pepperdine University and has had some success as a PGA TOUR professional.

MacArthur will play golf for Pepperdine next season.

"It was a great four years on varsity," MacArthur said. "I reached my goal of reaching state, but it wasn't a total complete year. But it was a great year for sure."
