Santa Clarita Valley-based volunteers with Organizing for America will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event Monday, Jan. 18.

Local OFA volunteers will hold a drive to collect essential household items with the Goodwill of Santa Clarita from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Goodwill, 26883 Bouquet Canyon Rd., Saugus 91350. Volunteers will collect hygiene and first-aid supplies.

The event is one of many service events Organizing for America volunteers are holding across the country this week. OFA is a project of the Democratic National Committee committed to supporting President Obama's agenda for change.

"On Martin Luther King Day, Organizing for America volunteers in California will answer Dr. King's call to service by holding service events in their local communities," said OFA California Director Mary Jane Stevenson.

"These service events will recognize the sacrifices that Dr. King and countless others made in the fight for civil rights and equality, and will allow volunteers in Santa Clarita to serve their community and those in need on this important occasion," Stevenson said.

Over the past few months, OFA has worked actively in communities across the country to mobilize support for the president's health insurance reform agenda.

Since June 6, Organizing for America volunteers in California have worked to build support for reform. Local volunteers have held more than 3,600 events in California and almost 25,000 events have been held in all 50 states and every congressional district to ensure that American's voices are heard on this important issue.

In California volunteers have made more than 23,000 calls to their members of Congress since August, contributing to more than one million calls to Congress nationwide since August to ensure that the historic momentum behind reform does not falter.
